He has called on Palestinians tobecome "sensitive to the horrors of the Holocaust" while also asking Jewsto recognize the "tragedy of Palestine for the Palestinians."Within the Holy Land, Ateek has fostered dialogue between Christian denominations and with Muslims and Jews. He has encouraged women and youth to take leadership roles, and works actively to stop the exodus of Christian Palestinians.Ateek, who watched Zionist troops forcibly evacuate his hometown, has remained committed to non-violence in spite of the sufferings of hisfamily and his fellow Palestinians. But even though he opposes all violence, he also states that peace will come only when the occupation ends.Because of his stance, Ateek has been attacked by hard-line supporters of Israel, who brand him as an anti-Semite and terrorist sympathizer. In his Oakland address, Ateek will call on churches to speak out against the occupation of Palestine and break their silence on the role of Christian Zionism in the conflict.<b>Ateek will speak at Montclair PresbyterianChurch, 5701 Thornhill Dr., Oakland. <a target="_blank" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=5701+Thornhill+Dr.,+Oakland&sll=37.882712,-122.277038&sspn=0.006639,0.014591&ie=UTF8&ll=37.835649,-122.212901&spn=0.006643,0.014591&z=16&iwloc=addr"> map here</a> For directions to the church, call510-339-1131.</b>The Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center was founded byPalestinian Christians to work for a nonviolent solution to theoccupation. On March 18, women scholars and activists will gather to discuss issues of militarism and occupation at the event entitled "Liberated" Women: War & Oppression in Occupied Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan hosted by Berkeley Journal of Middle Eastern & Islamic Law. Guest speakers include: Professor Fathia Al-Joumaily, Annie Fukushima, Hosai Ehsan and Dr. Razia Iqbal, Margo Okazawa-Rey, and speakers from MECA, and AfghanHands. The evening events will also include an artistic performance by Dina Omar.Speakers and participants will provide personal experiences and activist perspectives on the plight of women in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine. The symposium's objective is to complicate the language surrounding the occupation of these three countries—to expose the exploitation and disenfranchisement that directly result from occupation, and to delve deeper into how war and invasion disproportionately affects women. As the peace movement organizes to critique war, this event highlights the gendered dynamics to U.S. expansion in the name of "democracy". While the treatment of Abu Ghraib has become the most visible in the U.S., this symposium will make visible women's experiences. As conveyed by scholars, "wars dirty little secret" is the use of rape as a tool for exerting power. The normalization of rape in trafficking of women to and from occupied countries as well as complicating how war and its utilization of rape as a tool for penetration maybe understood more broadly: the rape of the land, community, sense of self-determination. In complicating our understanding the current war in Iraq and how surrounding countries have been impacted this event illuminates the contradictions of U.S. efforts to liberate Arab communities. Coalition Film Series – Lebanon and the Palestinian diasporaWith a report and discussion by Zeina Zaatari—activist with the National Council of Arab American, who traveled to Lebanon during the 2006 war.“A Summer Not to Forget”a documentary on the 2006 U.S./Israeli war against LebanonOn July 12, 2006, Hezbollah captured 2 Israeli soldiers. For the following 34 days, Lebanon witnessed continuous Israeli bombardment. This documentary takes you beyond the headlines into the harsh realities of war. It explores the devastation of a nation and a people caught under siege.Through powerful and often disturbing images, this film tells the story of yet another war on Lebanon: 1,200 civilians killed and 4,000 injured, more than one million people displaced, 78 bridges destroyed, 15,000 homes damaged, the environmental disaster of 15,000 tons of oil spilled on 80 km of Mediterranean coast, and many more catastrophes. In footage not shown by the western media, the film also exposes the devastation of 57 collective massacres in an attempt to capture the horror of its victims and their families. Directed by Carol Mansour, 27min.“Children of Shatila”a story of the Palestinian diasporaMany people first became aware of the Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon after the shocking and horrific Sabra-Shatila massacre that took place there in 1982. Located in Beirut's "belt of misery," the camp is home to 15,000 Palestinians and Lebanese who share a common experience of displacement, unemployment and poverty. Fifty years after the exile of their grandparents from Palestine, the children of Shatila attempt to come to terms with the reality of being refugees in a camp that has survived massacre, siege and starvation.Director Mai Masri focuses on two Palestinian children in the camp: Farah, age 11 and Issa, age 12. When these children are given video cameras, the story of the camp evolves from their personal narratives as they articulate the feelings and hopes of their generation. 50min., 1998, Arabic with English subtitles.http://www.ANSWERcoalition.org

Berkeley Women in Black Weekly Vigil - 04/04/2008, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Come and stand with us to protest the ongoing brutal occupation of Palestine. We give 15 million dollars each day to Israel and Israel buys weapons such as gunship helicopters and Catepillar bulldozers to use against the Palestinians.Peace will never be achieved in the Middle East unless there is justice for the Palestinian people. The United States gives over $3 billion annually to Israel in military aid, which is primarily used to continue its 40 year old Occupation of Palestinian Territories. The Bush Administration's alliance with the administration of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has resulted in unprecedented violence. The US and Israel's role in dictating internal Palestinian politics and fueling a growing rift between Fatah and Hamas has brought about the near-total collapse of any viable peace process. At Global Exchange, we believe the root of violence in the region is caused by the Occupation and the complete disregard of international law and UN resolutions. We believe if U.S. citizens truly understood the reality of what is happening in the region, and were exposed to the amount of dialogue that even the Israeli public is exposed to, we would be able to begin to pressure our government to change its one-sided policies toward Israel. Our fact-finding delegations to Palestine & Israel strive to further the U.S. public's understanding of the conflict and the region's realities by giving people first-hand exposure to the human rights abuses occurring in the Occupied Territories. Participants have the opportunity to hear a diverse spectrum of Palestinian and Israeli voices and learn about their understanding of the conflict and hopes for a solution. Our purpose for coming together is to raise awareness, unite, and mark 60 years since the ongoing Palestinian Nakba and struggle for self-determination.What: We are currently planning a very special day-long FREE Palestine, Peace and Solidarity Festival - with an amazing program of Palestinian, and other musicians for peace and justice.Where: The FREE outdoor festival will be and held at the Civic Center in downtown San Francisco - May 10th, 2008, which marks 60 years since the ongoing Nakba, of the Palestinian people. The purpose: of the Solidarity Festival is to raise the voices of Palestinian and other artists who resist the domination of their communities, through music. Palestinians are the largest and longest displaced refugee communities in the world and IDP’s (internally displaced persons) as a result of Israel’s occupation, Apartheid wall and illegal settlements - with no hope for a just solution in the foreseeable future. Our vision: is to use resistance music to issue a rallying call to activists, youth and other allies, to stand in solidarity, build a mass popular movement-and support the Palestinian struggle for self-determination and the right of return. In order to reach out beyond our existing allies, the event will serve as an opportunity to outreach broadly, and educate young people and other communities who are unaware, and interested in understanding the historical context through artistic expression. The Local Nakba Committee requests your demonstration of solidarity with the Palestinian people. During the war surrounding Israel’s declaration of statehood, more than half the indigenous Arab population of Palestine fled military action or were forced at gunpoint to leave. The government of Israel took over the refugees’ property, destroyed their villages and would not allow the refugees to return. The Palestinians became stateless. For Palestinians, dispossession is the heart of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.Learn more about the Palestinian experience of the creation of Israel as a Jewish state at a program consisting of films and discussion. Awwad was also instrumental in creating a Palestine Centre of PEN, the international writers' union.Hanan Awwad is a fervent advocate of Palestinian independence as well as a scholar, writer, and poet. A graduate of McGill University, she is head of the Department of Cultural Studies and the Department of Humanities at the College of Science and Technology in Jerusalem. In 1988, Dr. Awwad founded the Palestinian section of WILPF, where she works tirelessly for peace and an end to Israel’s occupation. In her role as chair of the PEN Centre, she has fought for freedom of speech and the protection of persecuted writers. She also takes part every year in conferences all over the world adressing issues such as imperialism, conflict resolution, and the role of women in promoting peace in the Middle East and elsewhere.Dr. Awwad's literary work deals with the role of women, in particular during the Intifada. Her poems connect themes of persecution, oppression, and suffering to love and the quest for solidarity. She believes that the chief obstacle to a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is Israel's violation of international law, its refusal to abide by United Nations Security Council resolutions, and its denial of Palestinian human rights. Dr. Awwad's message is especially relevant in the light of former President Jimmy Carter's recent trip to the Middle East, where he secured a pledge from Hamas leaders to abide by any peace agreement with Israel ratified by a vote of the Palestinian people.Cosponsored by Womens International League for Peace and Freedom - Peninsula Branch and Peninsula Peace and Justice Centerhttp://www.PeaceandJustice.org

Fundraising Party for Palestinian Film - SF - 06/18/2008, 7:30 PM - 12:00 AM

Bollyhood Cafe3372 Nineteenth Street @ MissionSan Francisco, CA, 94110(415) 970-0362 Fundraising Party for Palestinian Film'Lesh Sabreen?' Bollyhood Cafe3372 Nineteenth Street @ MissionSan Francisco, CA, 94110(415) 970-0362 - map Don't miss this chance to mingle with the film makers of the Palestinian short film 'Lesh Sabreen?' and learn about film making in Palestine. Diablo Peace & Justice Center, 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek; 925-933-7850A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict, Occupation 101 presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never-ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions. The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets.Free; Wheelchair accessible; free refreshmentshttp://www.mtdpc.org

Nora Barrows-Friedman Reports back from Palestine- Berk - 07/23/2008, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Mudraker's Cafe2801 Telegraph Avenue (3 blocks North of Ashby)BerkeleyHaving just returned again from occupied Palestine, Nora Barrows-Friedman (co-host and senior producer of Flashpoints on KPFA/Pacifica Radio, and correspondent with Inter Press Service and ElectronicIntifada.net) will present a slideshow and an open discussion on the current situation. For more background on Nora's work, please visit www.norabf.com and www.flashpoints.net.

Photo Exhibit and Report Back From Palestine - San Francisco - 07/25/2008, 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM

522 Valencia (at 16th St)SF, CA 94110Exhibit Begins at 5pm Program Begins at 6:30pmDonations at the DoorIncluding Chris Ghazaleh, Nancy Hernandez and more

Bay Area Women in Black Weekly Vigil Oakland - 07/26/2008, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Since April 7, 2007, Bay Area Women in Black has been standing vigil in front of the Grand Lake Theater (<a target="_blank" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&q=grand+lake+theatre&near=Oakland,+CA&fb=1&cid=0,0,3114480243440447905&sa=X&oi=local_result&resnum=1&ct=image"> Map</a>) every Saturday, from 12-1 with banners and signs, offering visible opposition to both the U.S. Occupation of Iraq and the Israeli Occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. We are all increasingly alarmed at the dishonest explanations for the U.S. military expansion in Iraq, the growing possibility of an invasion into Iran, increasing political corruption, torture and other forms of collective punishment, the destruction of houses and agricultural lands, expulsions and illegal imprisonment.
