Elk once thrived on the tallgrass prairie in Kansas, but they were eradicated by settlers in the late 1800's. In 1986, Fort Riley embarked on a project to reestablish a herd by reintroducing 12 elk to the installation. Further stocking of the herd resulted in growth, and by 2007 the elk herd on Fort Riley numbered 125. Steve Wahle will be at the library to talk about the natural history of elk, their successful reintroduction to Kansas, ongoing elk management and research that is conducted on Fort Riley. @ Dorothy Bramlage Public Library 230 W. 7th Street , Junction City.
