Fall 2011 Teen Class (age 11-16):
1. Flames!: Discover ways to make flames produce very bright light with thorium, acetylene, oxygen, limestone, and propane.
2. Rocket Engines: Discover how we use electricity, chemicals, and even ordinary gasses to move things through space.
3. Greenhouse Effect: This became known as “global warming” and then was morphed into “climate change” and it could cost us trillions of dollars. You’ll do some experiments to discover what they’re talking about.
4. Guaranteed to Improve Your Fuel Mileage! (Part One): First we’ll run several types of gasoline engines and measure their fuel consumption.
5. Guaranteed to Improve Your Fuel Mileage! (Part Two): Then we’ll add their special magnets to the fuel lines and run the tests again to see how much improvement we get.
6. Hydrogen Power: We’ll make some hydrogen and compare it ability to launch an object across the lab to that of other fuels.
7. Magnetic Levitation: Discover how they can make trains run at high speeds without ever touching the ground… have you ever wondered how they stop?
8. Mouse Trap Car: Using only wimpy mouse traps, try to make a simple wheeled platform go as far (and as fast) as possible.
9. Acetylene Cutting Torch: Steel has one strange chemical property that lets us cut it with fire. You’ll experiment with different ways to cut steel to find out which one is the easiest.
10. Molten Metal and Water:It is often a very bad idea to dump molten metal into water… so that’s exactly what we are going to do!
