Teen Class (11-16)

November 19, 2013

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

1. Unwise Stuff to do in a Microwave Part 1: Now is your chance to see what will happen when we put all kinds of things in a microwave oven. We’ll try things like fluorescent lights, raw eggs, DVD’s, metal, soap, and electronic devices to see if anything interesting happens.
2. Unwise Stuff to do in a Microwave Part 2: Same as week 1 except we will try other items.
3. Distillation: You’ll be heating mixtures of liquids and then try to capture the ones that boil off first by trapping the fumes in a freezing cold chamber.
4. Photovoltaic Cells: Solar power can be captured many ways. In these experiments you’ll turn sunlight directly into electricity and then use the electricity to make something run.
5. Boiling Water: Can you boil water at room temperature? Can you boil water in a paper cup? Does a watched pot never boil? You’ll find out!
6. Refraction of Light: Can you make a laser beam go around a corner without using mirrors? Does a bird aim straight for the fish it sees underwater? Could you make something freeze with a magnifying glass? Come and find out!
7. Glass Blowing: You’ll get to stretch, bend, squish, melt, and blow bubbles in glass!
8. Blue Bottle: This is a brain teaser. You’ll mix some chemicals, put them in a bottle, shake them up, and see what happens. The hard part is trying to figure out why it does what it does.
9. Disease Spreading: We’ll use chemistry and logic to try to find the person who started an epidemic.
10. Straw Tower: If a tower only has to hold two ounces, could you make one eight feet tall using only straws and tape?
